Photographing Under The Influence

Not that kind.

During my recent visit to Dallas, and while I wasn’t working, I got to do a little bit of the touristy type stuff that I love so much. Which might be a little different than the ‘regular’ touristy type stuff. When traveling, I really love to kind of take in the city. Pick a few blocks and live the life. Eat at the local spots, shop for the local produce, that kind of thing. And it has always, without fail, provided for an excellent time.

I would never have tried jugo de sandia if I didn’t venture that few extra blocks. I would never have had the chance to taste chocolate with black pepper and (quite possibly) bacon if I didn’t trust the local recommendations. And I never would have gotten to see art made out of license plates while visiting Dallas if I would have stuck with Texas Stadium and the Sixth Floor Museum.

So it was on this recent trip that I visited a local gallery and saw some pretty cool license plate art. Which, as a person working in an artistic medium, I couldn’t help but be influenced by. And before you cheat, and scroll down to the bottom of the page, no. I did not print a photo onto a license plate. Also, most things would clash with our new/old/retro NY plates anyhow.

But I did get a little abstract. One thing I liked about the license plate art (which was by a guy named Michael Kalish) was the way the light caught the texture of the steel. And since, as I have said, I couldn’t create something like that from scratch to save my life, I had to do the best I could. So I took an image of a stariwell in a parking garage in Las Colinas, TX and gave it my best. Sometimes I wonder if it’s actually just as tough to have a vision of something you want to end with, and then try to create that vision from something that already exists. I really wonder if that’s just as hard as starting from scratch? Change management for the inanimate set…

So here are the stairs. It was quite a feat to get this shot framed the way I wanted. It involved much contorting and leaning and sometimes hanging on for dear life. But I like the results. And I hope you do too! Until I have sold 20, this is now available in the store, which you can access over there on the left! Of course, yours won’t have that big signature on it. And by the way, you really should try watermelon juice!
